This toy penguin is thought to have belonged to the photographer Herbert Ponting, nicknamed ‘Ponko’. It’s an early example of a promotional item for a film, The Great White silence (1924) which Ponting made about Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica in the early 1910s.
