Cast of the Belvedere Torso, Royal Academy, London

Although the much-admired original torso is in the Vatican, this copy in London has been a source of admiration and inspiration for countless artists and sculptors. The crunched abs, the open legs and the twisted chest leave plenty to the imagination. And here in the RA’s gallery it’s shown alongside paintings which echo that muscular and physical pose – awkward manspreading and erotically charged, yet somehow still effortlessly beautiful.
