100 years ago, Georgian sovereignty and national identity were being pulled in multiple directions. Beyond the unifying symbol of St George, the scripts present on this money point to various influences. Russian (written in Cyrillic) speaks to Georgia’s time as an SSR within the Soviet Union, while the French text shows a possible European direction. And, of course, there is the unique and characterful Georgian script too. This is a country that has often been pushed or pulled in various political directions, a century ago as it is today, but it also remains completely true to itself.
